Securing Your Wireless Network – A Guide For The Novice

What if someone is scanning and reading your private information from your computer right now? Would you like it if your bank account details and online transaction details went into the wrong hands? Scary isn’t it? In the previous post we talked about the dangers of using an unsecured wireless connection, but how do we actually go about securing it?

Let’s see how you can actually tweak and manage your wireless network and turn it into something like the Great Wall of China… None of us would ever have to worry about getting hacked, losing valuable information or ending up with hefty bills (coz’ Mr.Unauthorized decided to have some fun at your expense) if you just asked yourselves these two simple questions:

·         What are WEP and WPA encryption and why the hell should I use them?

Encryption is the first line of defense for any network, computer or router and there are no exceptions. Will you be surprised if I told you that most of the routers ship with the encryption turned off?  Have you turned it on? If not, now would be the right time to do it, as not doing so will leave you completely exposed and vulnerable.

Earlier networks used to rely on WEP but the more recent WAP and WAP2 are more secure and difficult to hack, so I would advise that you go either with WAP or WAP2 when you go about securing your network. If you are using an older router that supports WEP only, then going in for a 128 bit encryption is what I would advise but make sure that the manufacturer has not issued any firmware upgrade (it can make the router WAP and WAP2 compatible).

Once you are done setting it up make sure to change the default name and password for the network or simple enough go for a service provider who does it all for you…

·         I have a router with firewall, why would I need to use these security features?

Though your firewall might stop a hacker from compromising your computer, it definitely can’t stop anyone from getting onto your network if they are within range of your Wi-Fi signal. That’s why it is always advisable to run software firewalls on every PC on the network, without a proper encryption and firewall anyone can use tools to spy on all the outgoing and incoming traffic on your Wi-Fi.

Securing your network is the first thing that you should do, when you either install a new or upgrade an existing wireless connection, not only will it save you from the dangers of losing your most intimate information but it might even cause financial damage, because all it takes is just a small mistake to let that peeping tom onto your network and into your life…

Hi

I would recommend this connection, as speed is good & also at affordable price. l have taken this decision after due consideration of other ISPs & their respective plans & demos

Order: l ordered this connection by filling request form on their site tikona.in. A day after l got call for order taking & free demo..l liked the speed that l was getting so l ordered it with plan of 4Mps.

Installation: I had to call 2 times to get installation as salesman promised me ll get installation on next if paid cash, but got it after 4 days. After installation l checked speed it was wooping 3.2Mps to 3.7Mps.. so more or less same speed for what l m paying for..!   Main reason l get such good speed is that their access point is near my building.

Conclusion: Strongly recommended

   Hi Friends

I chose to go for Tikona broadband after much consideration and in a day of getting the connection I must say I feel pretty happy with my choice. Following are a few reasons I took the decision

1. I was using reliance broadband+ and reliance 3G 5 GB plan. I finally decided to terminate both connections. The so-called 3.1 Mbps reliance broadband never gave me speed above 256 Kbps most of the time for years. The max speed it would have reached was around 1 Mbps and this happened in rare occasions. It was very disappointing to get dial-up speed sometimes.

2.For faster speed I took 3G and even bought a 28.8 Mbps capable Vodafone usb dongle to take full advantages of the super-fast 3G.The max speed I got was around 6/7 Mbps. Initially it’s very exciting to use such fast internet but It costs me around 1200 RS excluding tax just for 5 GB and sometimes when I crossed the limit I had to pay a lot for those extra data usage. It seemed to me it’s not worth paying so much even though I have no complaints about the speed..

3. I was really interested in the 999 hurricane 10 Mbps plan from You BB. But You is not available in my building. Airtel is also not available here. So I thought of giving tikona a try. TATA indicom broadband was not an option for me as I had already experienced it’s pathetic connection a few years ago.

So I filled the form on tikona website for a free demo on Nov 1st.I decided to take the 849 ADBB 9 GB plan. The sales guy called me up in the afternoon when I was in office and I told him to come to my house early next morning. He turned up around 10:30 on Nov 2nd and gave me a demo. The speedtest.net showed 2.1 Mbps. I opened a few websites. It worked fine. I was pleasantly surprised when I said I would take the 849 2 Mbps plan. and the sales guy told me that Tikona had launched a 4 Mbps,799,15 GB plan on Nov 1st .I was not aware of this new plan and when the guy told me about this plan without thinking for a sec I decided to take the new plan. So the guy left with the money and told me in 2 days the engineer would come for installation.

I got the user id and password next day on my mail and cell respectively. I didn’t receive any call in two days. So on 5th Nov I called their customer care and asked for the status. The guy said within 6 days of payment installation would be done. I was shocked as the sales guy said it would take 2 days and it’s mentioned in the connection receipt within 3 days of payment installation would be done. I argued with the guy on phone and said nowhere there’s mentioned it would take 6 days for installation. So I just hung up and went to tikona website and posted a message on the order tracking option to install ASAP.

To my surprise 2 engineers came for installation around 7 PM same day. One guy went to the roof to install the switch and the other guy was with me by my laptop. The funny thing is that this dude started browsing my folders. I asked him if the setup is done and he said the other guy on the room would let us know. Then he asked me for my songs folder and movies folder and transferred some stuff to his blackberry. I was like wth.!!!!!!Seriously tikona hire some professionals not college kids as engineers.

After an hour or so the other guy came from the roof and asked me to login with my userid. The first thing
I checked was speedtest.net.It showed 3.9 Mbps for dl speed. Then I downloaded some file on IDM, The speed was hovering within the range of 250-500 KB/s. Then I downloaded a torrent in uTorrent. The speed was pretty good. Around 400-450 KB/s. Within 24 hours of taking connection I have tested in speed test like 10 times. Every time It gave me download speed within 3.9 to 4 Mbps and the Uload speed around 0.5 Mbps. So it’s pretty consistent. Also I saw a few videos on YouTube. There was continuous streaming without any buffereing which was impressive. And It hasnt got disconnected once in a day.I can only hope it stays the same in the future.

The pricing is impressive compared to a lot of other ISPs.The speed is pretty good and consistently around 3.5 - 4 Mbps. The connection has been pretty stable for a day without getting disconnected even once...I have heard the technical support staff is pretty efficient too although I hope I will never have to contact them. Also the tikona self care site gives the data usage per session.Paying bills online looks easy too.

All in all I am very satisfied with the connection.

Hello,

I am Sandeep Deshpande and having a Tikona broadband connection.

My User ID is - 1104937538

I just want to share my feedback about Tikona support. I am always getting a good support from Tikona engineers. I talked with your engineer "Vikram Kale" who was very much interested to address my queries. He was good in explaining everything and he has good passion to resolve customer's problems. He was very polite in talking and interested to know my exact problem. Then he provided the right answers to my queries. Very good positive approach. I am very happy about the response which I received from him.

I can completely understand that, customer handling is very challenging type of work. You cannot satisfy every customer every time and those unsatisfied customers will be making big complaints. Satisfied customers will rarely send their feedback. The one very positive difference which I can notice between Tikona support and other company's support (e.g.- Nokia, HP support) is that, Tikona engineers are always very polite, interested to know customer's problem, Tikona engineers are not already frustrated like other company's support engineers and their technical knowledge level is very high.

Thank you for providing very good support to me

  Hi,

VOIP- The Future Of Communication

Still calling abroad from your regular phone? Tired of the hefty bills that keep showing up months after months? Well if you are, then probably you should consider using VOIP rather than your old fashioned telephone.

VOIP A.K.A Voice over Internet Protocol is a service that utilizes your high speed internet connection to connect your calls over to any landline or mobile in the world. But in order to make full use of this service you need to have a broadband connection, since a standard dial up connection cannot be used in conjunction with your internet connection to make calls.

Still doubtful about VOIP, Well It’s not surprising, since so many people are still ignorant about the benefits that VOIP brings with it. It’s time you switched over to VOIP because…

·         It’s Low Cost

VOIP can help you save tons of money since the service costs way less than what your regular telephone or mobile network would charge you. The moment you start using VOIP, you can expect to save anything between INR 5000 to INR 7000 in the first month itself if you make frequent calls abroad. Keep in mind though that VOIP can only be used with a broadband connection and not a dial up connection.

·         Unlimited Calling

Say bye to hefty bills due to the high rates of calling charged by your network. VOIP  is unlimited, meaning you can make calls whenever and wherever you want to without having to worry about varying rates linked to calling time of the day because you only pay a flat fee every month and make unlimited calls anywhere in the world. Sounds good isn’t it… wait there’s more

·         You Get To Keep The Goodies

If you thought that if you switched over to VOIP all your favorite features that you have on your phone like call waiting, call forward, caller ID and voice mail will be gone, you are dead wrong. VOIP has all this features already included in your plan, that too at no extra cost to you.

·         Call Clarity

VOIP over a broadband network has very good call clarity as experienced by most individuals. VOIP has the same level of call clarity as you would get when calling someone from your regular telephone. So, if call clarity is an issue with you, then you can say bye to your worries as VOIP is extremely good at that.

It’s time you got rid of that landline or you’re mobile to make international calls as VOIP can offer you a much cheaper and better alternative. Plus, just think about all that you can do with the money that you save on your phone bill.
